Renouncing Bangladeshi citizenship from the USA: the form, the fee and the letter you receive

Renouncing citizenship
To renounce Bangladeshi citizenship from the U.S., you hand in an application with your Bangladeshi passport, dual nationality certificate or NID. Los Angeles charges $184.80 and gives you a letter the same day, or within three business days by mail; the Ministry of Home Affairs is informed.

Checked against the official pages on 22 October 2026. How we check.

Los Angeles lists the requirements: the application form, a copy of the passport of your current nationality, one color photo with a white background, and the original Bangladeshi passport, dual nationality certificate or NID, which you surrender (Los Angeles page).

What you receive

Once the application is complete, the consulate gives you a “To Whom It May Concern” letter on its official pad.

Renouncing at the Los Angeles consulate

It says that you have renounced Bangladeshi citizenship and surrendered your passport, certificate or ID, and that the matter will be sent to the Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Dhaka (Los Angeles page).

Step What happens
1 You hand in or mail the form, the copies, the photo and the fee
2 You surrender the Bangladeshi passport, certificate or ID
3 The consulate gives you its “To Whom It May Concern” letter
4 The consulate informs the Ministry of Home Affairs in Dhaka

Los Angeles is the office that describes the procedure in full; the Embassy publishes the application form, and the other consulates general do not publish a renunciation page we could find.

The steps are Los Angeles’s description of how the application is processed (Los Angeles page). Each application needs its own money order or check, no older than 30 days, and fees are not refunded if you withdraw. Cash, personal checks and credit cards are refused.

By mail, Los Angeles takes renunciations through USPS only and processes them in three business days.

The file goes to the Consulate General of Bangladesh, 501 S Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036, with a prepaid return envelope and a Priority or Express tracking number; people at the same address can share one envelope (Los Angeles page).

Before you decide

Renouncing ends the right to a Bangladeshi passport. If you want to keep a link with Bangladesh without the passport, the NVR lets a foreign citizen of Bangladeshi origin travel there without a visa. If you want to keep both citizenships instead, see the dual nationality certificate.

A family renouncing together

Los Angeles asks for a separate money order or check for each application, even in one family (Los Angeles page).

By mail

Send the file with a prepaid USPS Priority or Express return envelope and its tracking number.
