Bangladesh dual citizenship from the USA: the Dual Nationality Certificate, applied for online

Dual nationality certificate
A Bangladeshi who becomes a U.S. citizen loses Bangladeshi citizenship at naturalization, according to the Embassy, and gets it back with a dual nationality certificate. You apply online, straight to the Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and pay by card; the Embassy says the process takes three to six months.

Checked against the official pages on 22 October 2026. How we check.

The Embassy explains why: the U.S. naturalization oath renounces allegiance to any foreign state, so Bangladeshi citizens who naturalize lose their Bangladeshi citizenship, and the dual nationality certificate restores it.

The U.S. and Canada are on the list of countries whose citizens of Bangladeshi origin may apply, under a notification of 2008 (Embassy page).

Applying online

The application, the documents and the payment all go through the Security Services Division’s online system; when the certificate is issued, you download it as a PDF and print it in color.

The dual nationality certificate

Applicants abroad do not need the 300-taka stamp: they use the affidavit attached to the Embassy’s page, notarized by any notary public (Embassy page).

Los Angeles gives the same steps (Los Angeles page).

The same notifications cover all of Europe and, separately, the United Kingdom in 2008, and Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, South Korea and Japan in 2012, according to the Embassy’s list (Embassy page).

The Embassy also quotes the U.S. State Department on what dual nationality means here: a dual national owes allegiance to both countries, must obey the laws of both, and has to use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. The Bangladeshi passport is for Bangladesh.

If you were not born in Bangladesh and have no Bangladeshi passport, NID or birth certificate, the Embassy says to attach your foreign birth certificate showing your parents, with a parent’s Bangladeshi passport, NID, birth certificate or dual nationality certificate.

New York’s own website still asks you to mail a dual nationality application to the consulate with a money order for US$ 92.40.

The Ministry’s page for the same consulate (updated in October 2026), the Embassy and Los Angeles send you to the online application of the Security Services Division instead, paid by card. (sources: 1, 2, 3)

Step Where
Application and payment The Security Services Division’s online system
Affidavit Any U.S. notary public, or a Bangladeshi office
Certificate A PDF in the system, printed in color
Tracking Your account in the online system

For applications filed on paper in the past, the Embassy still tracks them on its status page and returns the certificate in your prepaid envelope (Embassy page).

What the certificate opens

With it, a U.S. citizen can apply for a Bangladeshi e-passport, register a child born after naturalization (see birth registration), and use it as proof of origin for the NVR.

Technical problems with the online form

The Embassy gives the email of the Division’s ICT Cell, [email protected], for errors, with a screenshot (Embassy page).
