Bangladesh travel permit from the USA: the one-way document when your passport has run out

Travel permit
A travel permit takes a Bangladeshi citizen home when the passport has expired or been lost and there is no time to wait for a new one. It is valid for three months and only for the trip to Bangladesh. At the Embassy it costs $14.30 in five business days or $27.50 for the next business day.

Checked against the official pages on 22 October 2026. How we check.

The Embassy says the permit is issued only for going back to Bangladesh; to leave the country again you need a valid passport (Embassy page). You need a machine-readable or e-passport: the Embassy cannot issue a permit on a handwritten passport, and its holder applies for an e-passport instead.

What to bring or mail

  • the application form, filled out;
  • three recent color photos with a white background;
  • your most recent Bangladeshi passport and a copy of its data page;
  • a police report if the passport was lost.

The list is the Embassy’s. It takes applications at the counter during walk-in hours and by mail through USPS only, with a prepaid return envelope and a Priority or Express Mail tracking number (Embassy page).

Office Fee Notes
Embassy $14.30 regular, $27.50 urgent Card, money order or official check
Los Angeles $14.30 regular, $27.50 urgent Money order or cashier’s check
New York $27.50 Card at the counter
The travel permit file

The travel permit is not priced the same everywhere. The Embassy and Los Angeles charge $14.30 for regular delivery in five business days and $27.50 for next-day delivery; New York’s Ministry page gives a single fee of $27.50, payable by card, and lists no cheaper regular rate. (sources: 1, 2, 3)

The fees are each office’s own (Embassy, Los Angeles, New York).

At the Embassy, the money order or check must be no older than 30 days, each application needs its own payment even within one family, and fees are not refunded if you withdraw (Embassy page).

New York also accepts a U.S.-born applicant of Bangladeshi origin with a U.S. birth certificate and a parent’s Bangladeshi papers (New York page).

New York’s Ministry page asks for two photos rather than three, and accepts any one of a Bangladeshi passport, NID, birth registration certificate or dual nationality certificate; for a lost or stolen passport, the police report (New York page).

By mail, the Embassy wants the envelope marked “Attention: Travel Permit” and gives a separate email, [email protected], for questions (Embassy page).

Permit or new passport

If you have time, apply for the e-passport: the permit only gets you into Bangladesh, and you will need a passport there to come back. The Embassy says a handwritten passport holder’s e-passport takes 45 to 60 working days.

Your passport was lost

File a police report first; the permit application asks for it.

A family applying together

The Embassy asks for a separate money order or check for each application, even for one family (Embassy page).

For the permit
  • The application form
  • Three recent color photos
  • Your last Bangladeshi passport or the police report
  • The fee, one payment per applicant
  • A USPS return envelope with tracking, if by mail
 The permit is one-way: plan the new passport in Bangladesh before you fly.
